Raleigh International

  • Enable 2000 17-20 year olds to volunteer on community social action projects overseas
  • Encourage all returned volunteers to get involved in social action projects at home
  • Share Raleigh’s evidence base and contribute to third party data collection on the triple benefit of youth social action through overseas volunteering – to the individual, to overseas communities and to their own community on their return
  • Highlight the triple benefits of youth social action (community development overseas, individual personal development and action at home) in our 160 talks a year to young people at secondary schools and through other events

Through Raleigh International’s volunteer programmes, 1,712 young people from 31 countries developed their skills and confidence to become leaders and active citizens in their own right. This included 975 young volunteers from UK.

Over the past year, 696 17-20 year olds from the UK volunteered on community social action projects overseas with Raleigh International.

96 returned Raleigh volunteers carried out social action projects at home in their communities, ranging from establishing mobile libraries to hosting talks at their schools and colleges.

Raleigh shared its evidence base and contributed to third party data collection on the benefits of youth social action through overseas volunteering. Highlights included research around the value of youth in improving access to safe water and sanitation, building pathways to youth entrepreneurship, and continuing to build our own M&E evidence base.

Raleigh highlighted the benefits of youth social action at 111 events, including 86 in schools and colleges in the UK.

Quote from Charlotte Hill, CEO at Step Up To Serve
“The #iwill campaign is driven by leaders from across society who are committed to making youth social action a normal part of growing up in the UK.
We know that young people want to play an active part in improving their communities, and that in doing so, they develop their own skills for work and life.
Over 350 cross-sector organisations so far have pledged to support youth social action, and say #iwill. What will you do?”
