National Union of Students (NUS)
Work with and through our member students’ unions to increase student participation in social action. We will do this by:
- Evaluating and sharing the impact of student opportunities, highlighting the double benefit of social action for students and society.
- Focusing on overcoming barriers to participation, we will provide training and tools for students’ unions to help them to increase the number of students doing social action activities.
- In 2017 running a collaborative pilot with students’ unions in one region, to explore how SUs can be local hubs for social action.
- Utilising NUS communications channels to highlight examples of youth social action activity and opportunities for students to get involved.
- Through Dissertations for Good we will help students to use their education as a force for social good. We will work to partner them with non-academic organisations so they can collaborate to complete important research. We will support the #iwill campaign to get more young people involved in social action by granting a year long pro bono membership to this research network.
Ahead of 2017, NUS are pleased to be making a new pledge to the #iwill campaign, in order to cement and build upon the important work of previous years. Our previous pledge is below:
NUS will collaborate with partner organisations to influence the vision, values and policy of the education sector to embed and grow participation in youth social action:
– We will work with students’ unions to evaluate and share the impact of student opportunities, highlighting the double benefit of social action for students and society.
– Focusing on overcoming barriers to participation, we will provide training and tools for students’ unions to help them to increase the number of students doing social action activities.
– In Student Volunteering Week, highlight examples of youth social action and the principles underpinning youth social action to the student volunteering teams involved in student volunteering week, reaching over 80 student volunteering teams, who will involve 10,000 student volunteers through the weeks activity alongside our social media reach of over 1 million people.
– NUS communications channels – We will highlight examples of youth social action activity and opportunities for students to get involved through our social media channels as well as our direct student facing communication channels – NUS Digital which has the potential to directly reach 1 million students
Quote from Richard Brooks, NUS Vice-President Union Development
“As NUS Vice-President Union Development I will ensure that the student movement is at the heart of conversations about how Student Opportunities and social action changes students’ lives, and changes society for the better”
