Holocaust Memorial Day Trust

27 January, Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) is a chance for everyone to remember the millions murdered in the Holocaust, under Nazi Persecution and in the genocides that have happened since: in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and the ongoing Genocide in Darfur. On HMD thousands of people come together to honour the survivors of these atrocities and to use the lessons of their experience to challenge hatred and discrimination today.

Young people are central to ensuring these important messages reach future generations. The HMD Youth Champion Programme empowers young people to take action for Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) through organising their own HMD events, raising awareness of HMD, and working to combat hatred and prejudice within their communities. Through our Holocaust Memorial Day Youth Champions programme we will:

  • Enable young people to be the driving forcebehind Holocaust Memorial Day, raising awareness of the Holocaust, genocide and the dangers of hatred within communities today
  • Produce resourcesto engage and inspire young people to recognise the relevance of Holocaust Memorial Day and take action to promote tolerance
  • Supportand train young people in campaigning, leadership, events and communications skills enabling them to hold meaningful awareness raising activities and events
  • Create a networkof likeminded young people to strengthen the movement of young people learning from the past to create a safer future
  • Support intergenerational projects to enable young people to learn from the powerful stories of genocide survivors
  • Provide ongoing developmentopportunities for young people

Quote from Charlotte Hill, CEO at Step Up To Serve
"The #iwill campaign is driven by leaders from across society who are committed to making youth social action a normal part of growing up in the UK. We know that young people want to play an active part in improving their communities, and that in doing so, they develop their own skills for work and life. Over 350 cross-sector organisations so far have pledged to support youth social action, and say #iwill. What will you do?"
