Hackney Community College
- Continue to support ALL students in our respective schools and colleges to participate in high-quality social action, where each one can develop the character and skills needed for life, whilst leading positive societal change.
- Share best practice and encourage other education leaders and partners to prioritise youth social action within their work by opening our doors for visits; spreading the word through our networks and encouraging more schools and colleges to make an #iwill pledge.
From Register to Vote campaigns, to lobbying MPs, with plenty of volunteering and community involvement along the way – it’s been a great year for social action at Hackney Community College. We’re proud to have contributed to 2,000 local 18 year-olds registering to vote in 2015, and were thrilled to be on BBC News hosting a packed youth hustings event, working with CitizensUK. Students regularly lobby MPs at Westminster, about issues that will make a difference to students of the future. We have an active, elected student association with officers, class reps and student governors – making sure the student voice is heard and acted upon. This gives students the skills to be heard and take action in wider society. As well as making a difference to our community, our students are setting themselves up for a successful future, with valuable political contacts and really strong examples to add to their CVs.
Ian Ashman, Principal, Hackney Community College
“Raising the profile of the opportunities for, and importance of social action among young people is crucial. #iwill is doing a great job and we’re proud to pledge our support.”
