- DCLG is committed to encouraging a generation of young people to get involved with social action.
- We place young people and their role in the community at the heart of our policy. For instance the Haverhill Our Place! Pioneer is enhancing its ‘Youth Offer’, providing opportunities for young people to gain new skills and undertake training with local businesses. Young people are actively involved in the design of this.
- Through partner organisations such as in Youth United we are investing £10m to provide over 400 new units and 10 000 available places across the country for young people to participate in uniform cadet organisations like the Scouts and Girl Guides. Having benefited from this investment, members return each year to help lead the organisations they were once involved in.
- We are also committing £5.2m in the Near Neighbours Catalyst training programme for young people from different faith and ethnic backgrounds, which aims to build their confidence and leadership skills through a range of activities and learning opportunities. This empowers them to participate better in their communities and promotes a sense of responsibility.
- By encouraging local action, people of all backgrounds can take up the challenge and improve their neighbourhoods; social action is key to achieving this.
